Rookie Story...
I have a long history in the music business which has branched off into fashion, film and sports from 1994-current. But one that stands out is a current experience in 2011.
As I sat in my car outside my apartment building, “Where is my career going?” I wondered. The music business had changed so drastically. The recession had hit and services that would normally get paid for before had become luxuries. After all these years, incredible resources & experiences working with everyone from G-Unit, Kanye West, Just Blaze etc. this sudden feeling of being “lost” had to change. So instead of waiting for life to live me, I decided to live life.
I got in my car and drove to see my friend DJ Furious Styles in DC. I met with producers from the DMV area and we built on creative ideas. I got a phone call from multi-platinum producer Bink. He asked me to come down to Norfolk and chop it up, so I decided to drive there next. While in Norfolk, the legendary producer Nottz Raw hit me up and said come through and lets build. I started my journey on the road not knowing what each location would bring me, but it felt refreshing.
The key location and person that changed everything for me was in Atlanta, seeing my good friend and multi-platinum producer Focus. I told him about the journey so far. He asked me if I was filming it and I told him that I didn't have a video camera. He went to his closet and pulled out a Samsung handheld and said, “Here, now go document it”. I was extremely grateful and still am. From that point forward, I retraced my travels and went on new adventures all across the country. I saw everyone from Hi Tek in Cincinnati, Snoop Dogg & Game in LA, Big KRIT in Mississippi, you name it!
By having amazing conversations with music producers Megahertz and Nick Wiz, all these other ideas on how to develop this documentary came about. From all these experiences I gained a book proposal, reality show episodes, and most importantly, a spiritual self awareness. It showed me what I was made of and how far I’d go for what I believed in. That was something that I questioned before I started my journey.
The project is still in development, but it showed me that against odds such as anxiety, fear, anger, etc., one small decision to get in my car and visit a friend in Washington, D.C. led to the greatest experiences in my personal life and career. I hope that this story inspires others to move their feet and take a leap of blind faith in this journey of life…
This, was my Rookie Season.
